Perception Obscura
Project Proposal
Perception Obscura is a visual interpretation of how people form their understanding of the world through misguided information. What we see is not always true, and we have to dig deeper to find the truth.
We base our perception of the world on what we want to see, not on what is actually happening. Often we are influenced by those around us, which obscures our perception. We form our views and beliefs based on this obscured outlook and emotions, which blinds us from the truth. What we assume is real is a distorted reality that we create. The silver lining becomes something faint or unrecognizable while we search for the truth.

Purpose
This project was inspired while working in the global security intelligence field. I have encountered countless instances through work, news networks, and social media, where people accept information at face value without question or gathering additional information. The lack of personal research has resulted in us believing what the news and social media say. We have unconsciously created a tunnel vision that blinds the truth when it comes to gathering information. This project aims to show the disorientation of reality through the out of focus elements while the truth is in plain sight. The focus is not of the out of focus elements but, what is in focus, the mirror. The mirror is that sliver of hope in the vast obscurity within and surrounding it.

Project Details
The project itself is minimal which includes a crew of 1, myself and minimal equipment. No electricity is needed and the photography is limited to no more than one hour for set up to break down. I will adhere to security and safety regulations. All equipment used will be supplied by myself with a list as followed: One DSLR camera, one tripod, two light stands (no lights attached or used), a set of three 12x12 inch mirrors, and a broom.
The light stands will be used to mount a single mirror at a desired height for the scene. Additional mirrors are used for backup and the broom for clean up in case a mirror breaks. The camera will be mounted in front of the mirror to photograph the reflection of the mirror. The mirror will then be removed and the background behind the mirror will be photographed.

Presentation
The project consists of 16 sublimation metal prints accompanied by 16 glass prints to create 16 gallery-ready installments. Each 10x10 inch glass print will be hanging a minimum of 1-2 feet in front of the 24x36 inch metal print to simulate our perceived notion of reality.
